“What does that even mean?”

“Hang on, let me show you.” Feverishly looks for Reddit post “It’s cool, I promise.”

“It’s something stupid from Reddit again, isn’t it?”

I am going to actually do this, to my wife, right when she gets home… which should be any minute now.

Stay tuned for updates, as this story unfolds…

Edit 1: 5 minutes later - still waiting.

Edit 2: 25 minutes later - still waiting.

Edit 3: 33 Minutes later - she called, she bought a god damn kitchen aid, which means she’s gonna make bread later. I see this as an absolute win. Anyways, I must go get the heavy things from the car. Stand by for the pick-up line delivery.

Edit 4: 41 minutes later - pick-up line delivered. Thankfully, she loves me because my delivery was so bad, I wouldn’t blame her for filing for a divorce.

She just smiled, gave me a mildly defeated sigh and asked ‘Did you want to touch my butt? Is that it?’ and just turned around and quietly said - ‘…go ahead.’

I took my free butt grab, showed her why I said it.. and now, she wants to start torching our lawn furniture in an attempt to repair it.

Today was a good day.

Final edit: 1+ hours later - The bread is confirmed. I am uncommonly excited by this.

She smoked a little, grabbed her ipad and started chuckling over this thread. Y’all made our evening - cheers, all!

Bread update - So, my house smells like a bakery. Fan-freakin-tastic… She made 2 loaves because we will both be picking at it for a while… and, this just in: She’s raising dough for sourdough. She’s been wanting to try it, but has had a hard time with raising a starter so, here’s hoping for the best. Still a good day.

Next up, freezer jam.

The wife, making bread

For anyone who happens to see this and think they should restore their weathered plastics on their vehicle using this method, please don't. I've gotten in countless arguments about this and people are insufferable. Melting the top layer brings oils to the surface, making it look great, but it doesn't last and they'll end up looking even worse than before in a short while. Plastic polishes and protectants are the way to go, unless you're trying to quick sell a vehicle and don't care about the long term. I've tried this method multiple times and ways and that's always the end result after a few weeks/months. Surely no one will see this, but for the one person that does, don't ruin your restoration project using this method

1k

u/madmaxturbator 2d ago

Does this make sense for stadiums then? Why is the stadium person doing this, surely they also care about the cost of replacing these in a few months? Or do they not care as much, so what if it gets shitty soon, these are expected to get shitty....

1k

u/Mastertexan1 2d ago

I’d imagine those seats are designed with this in mind where car parts are not

791

u/synthesis777 2d ago

And / or it's easier to do this every few months or so than to polish and protect every seat on some kind of longer term schedule.

468

u/pizzafourlife 2d ago

and that is stupid heavy plastic so probably less bothered by it

the cost of replacing these in a few months

They don't have to replace them, the problem is that the treatment is short lasting so they'll have to redo the treatment in a month again, and again, and again, until there's barely any oils left for it to work. So no, it doesn't make sense as a sustainable solution for a stadium, but it's perfectly fine for a 1 time special event if scheduling or budget don't allow for proper restoration.

→ More replies

62

u/Alswel 2d ago

I'd imagine there's the factor of the cost of polish for however many seats a stadium might have vs the gas it takes to restore the seats too

11

u/JeshkaTheLoon 1d ago

Don't forget the time. Time is money too. Even on a fixed salary, I am sure the guy has other things he gets paid to be doing with that time.

18

u/wqert 1d ago

You got them awards and the upvotes and I am sure you aren't lying but I found the opposite to be true. With all the chemicals one only applies some substance to the surface (and pores if you will), that tends to rinse off after a couple of days in the rain.

Heat gunning the plastics allows the very top layer to melt back into its regular inner structure, after these layers had been disintegrated by UV radiation and thus became grey. To me it appeared to be more permanent/longer lasting, as it kind of reversed the damage, rather than just dressing it.

Maybe I was using the wrong products, who knows, it's been some years ago by now.

Edit: thanks for the upvotes!

57

u/clayj9 1d ago

I done it to my cars faded plastics and it worked a charm too for at least 2 years until I sold it. The products are usually shit and wear off the next wash, I'm sure the expensive stuff is better but I already have a heat gun and it's free(ish) and lasts years. So I know what I'm still doing.

→ More replies

45

u/cyclonicleo1 1d ago

From what I understand, you're pretty much right. Also, these plastics are a much heavier grade and designed to be in the elements pretty much for decades, so they're far more resilient to this sort of treatment than automotive or residential grade plastics.

controlling weeds

I am upset. I am upset that this is an option. I am upset that I have ever used a conventional mechanical edger or herbicide when FIRE WAS AN OPTION AND NONE OF YOU TOLD ME!

32

u/EZ-PEAS 2d ago

It's called flame weeding and it legit works wonderfully. They only caveat is that you generally have to get to the plants when they're small (a few inches or less) or else you just have big dead weeds all over the place that you want to pull anyway.

The goal is not to incinerate the weeds, the goal is to shock them with high heat to the leaves for a second or so. This causes massive cellular trauma- about 15 minutes later it'll look like they haven't been watered in a month and the next day they'll be dead and brown. It can also work better than traditional weeding too, because you kill the leaves and not the entire plant, so the plant diverts all the resources away from its roots in an attempt to grow more leaves... and ends up killing its own roots.

It isn't super duper accurate, so you won't replace your edger or garden spade, but if you ever want to go scorched Earth (literally) and knock down a whole garden bed it works great.

Super convenient for all those little annoying weeds in sidewalk cracks. I also have a rock garden that grows annoying little weeds, great for that too.

9

u/suitology 2d ago

It's how I do the vines on my chain link. Every year they try to grow.

I went there back at the beginning of the century for grad school so I was kinda removed from the frat party culture. One year the idiots didn't pay attention to where they put the couch to burn and the flame wound up bringing down a power line which knocked out the power for many blocks. It was a party street that it happened on and the fire department was pissed. I found out about it because a corner store was only taking cash when I went into town as their power was out. The clerk said that the electric company had informed everyone that getting power back to that street was very low priority and not to expect restoration for several hours. It's been so long that i honestly don't remember if it was the end of the year or a football game that prompted it. They burned a lot of couches there

The top layer is damaged. They burn that off exposing the colored plastic under it. It’s done with car bumpers as well

819

u/jamesdo72 2d ago

Oxidization of plastic can make it chalky or discolored. They’re just burning off the oxidized layer.

174

u/msannethropik 2d ago

The most selfish of chemical reactions are those darn electron-stealing reducers. They spew all kinds of electronegativity.

56

u/VomMom 2d ago edited 2d ago

Agreed! Oxygen was minding its own business until this plastic came along and wanted it’s electrons!

*draw would be more accurate than spew. I hate how confusing the language is around redox reactions :(

More just remelting the top layer to remove the surface damage. Have done this after machining and sanding acrylic

26

u/ei283 2d ago

I assumed this was more along the lines of what it was doing. The white finish looks like fine scratches, so I assumed the hot flame simply remelts and flattens the rough scratched surface

16

u/RollingZepp 2d ago

Yes, it's an actual manufacturing process called flame polishing.

We do this on BPA-free (tritan) bottles that come in with dents. Granted, using a standard heat gun - not a flamethrower..

Polycarbonate can get dents but you can smack those out. Really bad dents can leave creases in them though. The remedy? Heat gun.

PET bottles? If you leave them out in the sun they’ll completely deform and often shrink. If you want a 3 gallon PET bottle, just leave your empty 5 gallon one in your car in the sun.

There's video of it from start to finish. It's insane how fast it is.

Edit: Here's the video. Warning: there's multiple people on fire and images of what we now know are dead people in this video, though nothing too gory. The video shows the entire thing start to finish, and the video is only six minutes long. Insane.

u/Pocketsquids 2d ago

Are these seats just really dense or are they made of something flame resistant? Why don’t they melt? How many times can the top layer be burned off? So cool.

145

u/iLikeFunToo 2d ago

Not flame resistant, just not quite hot enough to sustain a burn. The top layer does melt. Can be redone probably until the plastic becomes brittle and breaks, I doubt this does a lot to the life but I could be wrong.

72

u/Stony_Logica1 2d ago

The priority is to look good, rather than maximizing the life of the seat.

78

u/PaulFormerlySaul 2d ago

from a management perspective, that's not what you want. I studied sport management in grad school and work in risk management/venue management, and replacing stadium seats is very costly. You want to maximize the lifespan of those seats. It can cost upwards of ~$30M to reseat a full-size stadium in America.

29

u/Rndom_Gy_159 2d ago

Really? Where does the cost go? Assuming 80k seats at $10/seat (I have no idea if this is reasonable) is $800k. At 15 mins per chair to install (again, no idea if it's true) is 20k man hours at $50/hour is $1 million.

That leaves $28 million for logistics of disposal of old seats and receiving of new.

Where's this ballpark math (pun intended) wrong?

20

u/Title26 2d ago

Their figure is probably for stadiums with much nicer seats than this.

8

u/SeriouslyImADragon 2d ago

I could see $500/seat being reasonable for a modern stadium with the flip-down (movie theater style) seats with cupholders.

That's an average cost of course, things don't really price 'per unit' for jobs like this, you pay for the materials, design & engineering (i.e. to fit your existing bolt holes or frames), retooling the production facility, logistics, installation, etc. all separately.

Would be cool to selectively restore seats in a pattern/design that could be enjoyed from afar

Years of spectator flatulence were no match against mild blowtorching.

Were the seats designed with this in mind or was this kinda a life hack someone developed after?

Pissed at my guidance counselor for not letting me know a job like this existed. Now I'm stuck with stupid ass spreadsheets and Word tables when I could have been using a god damn flamethrower.

I work for a car dealer. We do this with faded plastic car parts, like trim and bumper covers. A heat gun is safer to use than an open flame, Works great.

Oh sure, but when I light stadium seats on fire, it's all "Go home, you're drunk"

6

u/WildRaccoon6 2d ago

Thats only short term repair, after torching it that plastic is so brittle, give it couple of months and starts cracking so easy

u/NaturalBackPain 2d ago

Something tells me this process also kills Covid.....

u/PositiveAvocado93 1d ago

In addition to scratches, the plastic resin has become oxidized due to UV exposure (these seats probably get lots of sunshine!). Red pigment is really hard to protect, and with heavy UV exposure it turns cloudy (paint on red cars can also suffer the same problem).

This torch is melting away the oxidized top layer, allowing fresh red plastic to flow across the surface
