Lived near the stadium, the hole where the swastika is can still be seen - I feel like I stood “in” it but it’s been over 30 years.

They had a little festival / farmers market inside the stadium, it was a fun day for a 7-8 year old.

Tbf people of this sentiment are generally more likely to hiss at a book than to read it.

On the subject, early last year a friend posted something on Facebook to the effect of "Germans don't feel the need to have statues commemorating Nazis, who do Americans need to commemorate the Confederacy". This conservative dude made a comment going "It's because Germans deny their history, they pretend they did nothing wrong, etc."

So I guess Germany needs to start putting up a bunch of statues and swastikas honoring Nazism to prove they don't support Nazism (I assume that was the idea, anyhow, he never replied when I asked)

130

u/ViziDoodle 2d ago

You what's over hitler's burial space is now? Nothing. No statue, it's just a parking lot.

And you know what's (roughly) nearby it?

Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, (Memorial for the murdered Jews of Europe) a set of many large blocks to count and remember all those lost in the Holocaust. Germany remembers its history by honoring those who were murdered, yes, murdered, so that their losses of life will never be forgotten

77

u/FlyingDragoon 2d ago

Kinda wish they made his actual burial site the same location that connects to a toilet stall. "Pay 5 Euros to shit on Hitler"

I'd eat so much fiber just for the occasion.

27

u/Mcwequiesk 1d ago

I'd get a passport and learn German for that opportunity lmao

23

u/PinkWhaleOrgy 1d ago

You don’t have to learn German, but you should probably get a passport homie. Wide world out there and all. Coincidently I am writing this walking through that exact parking lot on my way to work.

116

u/lurker_cx 2d ago

He is also wrong, Germans really do not deny the history. They teach very painful lessons and face it. The Japanese have been less introspective, but the Germans know what happened.

34

u/snflowerings 2d ago

Germans also don't miss any chance to educate the younger generation (in the school system) about what happened and how it happened, precisely so it won't happen again

13

u/PigsCanFly2day 2d ago

Thank you. I was going to say the same. From my understanding, it's something they teach heavily and look back upon. They have learned from their history so as to not repeat it.

This new video player on Reddit mobile sucks only a little less than the eastern front in 1944

865

u/relddir123 2d ago

It’s been patchily added for the last few months.

It’s bad. Bring back the old mobile player.

279

u/mylifeingames 2d ago

what’s new exactly? i hate how nothing has sound

337

u/relddir123 2d ago

The sound might be a coincidence based on the posts you’re seeing. I have no sound issues when a video has sound.

Essentially, tapping on the title of a video no longer brings you to the traditional post page, but rather more of an r/pan style page. It makes comments trickier to access and just generally looks bad.

Also, and this might be because my phone is set to a language that writes from right to left, the audio button switched sides.

87

u/lost_point 2d ago

Also if you want to pause the video to not loop while you’re in the comments you need to expand it, pause it, then crucially click the little “comments” button on the right. Scrolling down moves you to the next video. It’s a total mess.

29

u/JakobiGaming 2d ago

They’re basically just turning Reddit into Tiktok at this point

18

u/oojacoboo 2d ago

It also keeps playing the video OVER and OVER again while you’re trying to read comments. You have to go up and pause or mute the video, then go about your commenting. It should mute by default when you click to comment, at the least. Or just trash it, the UX sucks.

18

u/hxmiltrxsh 2d ago

I don’t remember where the audio button was before but it’s on the right for me

Don’t use the Reddit mobile app. Every other app is better

45

u/A_Grand_Coconut 2d ago

I wish other apps had the same layout and controls(?) as Alien Blue which is what the official app is based on. As someone who started using Reddit with alien blue, it’s reeeeaally hard to get used to other app layouts.

Although they keep adding more shit to this app so much so that it’s making it more palatable to switch or just outright not using Reddit on my phone anymore.

11

u/CaptainCortez 2d ago edited 2d ago

I held on to Alien Blue until it literally stopped working. Moved to Apollo and I’m totally happy with it. There are a few things missing that I liked about AB, but in a lot of ways it’s better. The developer is also super responsive and is constantly adding new features. Iirc he was an AB enthusiast, as well.

Check the app’s subreddit for more info: /r/apolloapp

→ More replies

38

u/Informal-Combination 2d ago

If you have iOS Apollo is a very similar layout to Alien Blue. I used Alien Blue for a year or two after it was no longer supported until too many features stopped working. Apollo is what I switched to and honestly its better then Alien Blue ever was.

9

u/xxatticus 2d ago

Apollo is the way. Pay for pro too. It’s worth the $2.99 or whatever. Such a better experience.

6

u/toe_riffic 2d ago

I was using AB for a few years up until Reddit killed it. Then I used the official app literally up until today after I saw this god awful update. I am currently on Apollo and I like it! There’s a ton of cool features on here that are not on the official app. It’s gonna take some getting used to, but I like it! I already paid for the $5 upgrade!

Try Apollo. I switched over to it a few months ago and it’s loads better then the main app. Way less ads as well. I wound up paying 5 for the premium version and it’s been completely worth it. I’m just pissed that they completely broke the mobile website to try and force everyone onto the app in the first place. Literally none of the “improvements” they’ve added since Gold became a thing have made things better.

I know eventually Reddit will break all the third party stuff but in the meantime it’s way better then using their platform

206

u/HaloGuy381 2d ago

I like to imagine at some point Eisenhower himself had to step in and say, “boys, I admire your enthusiasm, but we need those explosives on the front lines, and we want Nuremburg to still exist afterward” to get them to not deplete half the Allied armory in the process.

106

u/IGrowMarijuanaNow 2d ago

Showing this to troops and the subsequent morale boost was probably worth much more than the excess explosives used

28

u/RaynSideways 2d ago

Eh. By the time this was destroyed (April 22nd, 1945) the Soviets had already entered Berlin. I think it would have been pretty obvious at that point the war was over. Going so far out of your way for a morale boost wasn't really necessary at that point.

21

u/IGrowMarijuanaNow 2d ago

Idk, if I was still on whatever frontlines that the original comment was referring too I’d want as much moral support as I could get. I know little of the details though sry.

23

I think the British won. From Wikipedia: On 18 April 1947, the Royal Navy detonated 6,700 tonnes of explosives at the German naval base on Heligoland, creating one of the biggest single non-nuclear detonations in history. The blow shook the main island several miles down to its base, changing its shape.

12

u/learn2die101 2d ago

For reference, the Lebanon explosion was estimated to be about 1500 tons... So thats a fuck ton of explosives to be 6.7 kT

That's a Hakenkreuz, not a Swastika.

The man who translated Mein Kamf from German to English was a Christian evangelist. The word used in Mein Kamf is Hakenkreuz, which is literally “hooked cross” and it’s a Christian symbol.

There are Christian tombs in Jerusalem with the same symbol in them. Nazi Germans were Christians, their belt buckles said “Gott mit Uns” which translates to “God with us”.

I've been there, and stood on those steps. Nuremberg is a great place to visit. Germany has world class museums, and Nuremberg is home to two major ones - one right near these rally grounds detailing how the Nazis were able to rise into power, and one at the site of the Nuremberg trials (much further out of the city center) detailing how they were set up, etc. Then you have the old city, with the castle, both also worth a visit. Nazi symbols are illegal in modern day Germany. They do not fuck around.

Edit: one thing that makes the museums world class is that every peice of information is available in audio form, in any language you can think of, they give you tablet style devices and headphones and you navigate like that

I went to Nuremberg for a conference and it was right by the rally grounds and the museum. Went one afternoon. Totally agree it was an incredible experience. The scale of it all, the ambitions they had, the way the built up political momentum and also the cruelty was all mind blowing.

I wished I had visited when I studied WW2 in school as it made it that much more real and gave a different perspective to going to UK WW2 museums. Vowed that when my kids are old enough that I'll take them there.

Also, I loved that they had put a race track through the rally grounds. Kind of felt like it was preserved as a historical warning, but not so respected as to create a reverence for it.

I was strangely reminded of The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" scene.

Watching a casino being demo’d with explosives is quite awesome. But it was the Stardust and another monstrosity would simply go up behind it and instead of Wayne Newton we get someone else. This, this is like bringing down the Berlin Wall. It represents something that is a threat to a group of people, community, and in this case, the world. Blowing it up brings a sense of closure and an end for something that is now rarely displayed with pride. And if it is displayed, it doesn’t have one of the most efficient militaries the world has ever seen fighting for it.

Please be aware that swastika is also a sacred symbol for a billion hindus. Hitler appropriated the haken krauz and brought disrepute to this symbol.

The stuff they blew up is literally not Swastika. The Swastika and Hakenkreuz look physically different.

There is no record of Hitler let alone any Nazi using the word Swastika.

It has always been Hakenkreuz. Which literally translates to Hooked Cross in English.

These people are just arrogant & ignorant who keeps calling it Swastika. Swastika is literally a Sanskrit word. Hindus have been using the word centuries before Jesus was born.
